Alan Jones http://marksonsparks.com/alan-jones/ http://marksonsparks.com/alan-jones/#comments Sat, 21 Apr 2012 15:46:36 +0000 Paul http://marksonsparks.com/?p=75 Alan JonesAlan Jones’ first race was the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix at the fast Montjuïc circuit in his purchased Hesketh, and the weekend was to be one of the most tragic in Formula One history. After four races in F1 the team chose not to continue racing, but Jones did, as the race after his team disbanded he was named as an injury replacement for Rolf Stommelen on Graham Hill‘s racing team. He had a best finish of fifth at Nürburgring while there.

Jones earned his first full-time F1 drive in 1976, in John Surtees‘ racing team. His car was mostly known for its infamous Durex sponsorship, but he managed several good finishes in it, a fourth in Japan being the best of them. He made the most of the opportunity and won at the Österreichring for his maiden victory, finishing seventh in the championship.

By 1977, he had already caught the attention of Frank Williams, who was looking to rebuild his F1 racing team. Williams Grand Prix had struggled for success in its first years and Jones was entrusted to give them their first taste of it. He helped put the team on the F1 map in 1979 using the Williams FW07, after winning four races in the span of five events near the end of the season. Jones finished third in the championship hunt that year, and it was the springboard to an excellent 1980 campaign.

Jones won seven races in 1980, although the Spanish Grand Prix was later removed from the championship and the Australian Grand Prix was a non-championship race, so only five counted towards the Championship. Throughout the season he had a car which consistently made the podium, and he achieved ten during the year. At the end of the season he had beaten Nelson Piquet by 13 points in the standings, becoming Australia‘s first World Champion since Sir Jack Brabham. He announced his retirement after the season, which he managed to cap off with a win in Las Vegas, but came out of retirement for a one-time drive with Arrows in 1983. Two more years later, Team Haas was created and Jones was the first driver for that outfit, and he would race a full season in 1986, his first in five years, but after a series of disappointing results he left F1 for good.

A competitive third placing at the 1988 Bathurst 1000 saw him signed up as full time number 2 driver to Tony Longhurst inhis Ford Sierra team. The team switched to BMWs in 1991, which saw the return of reliability at the cost of speed. A switch to Glenn Seton Racing mid-season in 1992 brought improved results and race wins and he finished runner up to his team leader Glenn Seton as their V8 Ford Falcons dominated the 1993 Australian Touring Car Championship. The team‘s dominance faded over the next few years. The 1995 Bathurst 1000 looked to be a high point with a memorable 1-2 finish for their two cars fading into just a second for the car Jones shared with Allan Grice. Jones took the major sponsor to form a new team with engineering brothers Ross and Jim Stone as partners, known commercially as Pack Leader Racing. Initially fast, the partnership was fading by 1997 and the Stones bought Jones out, rebadging the team as Stone Brothers Racing. Jones returned to race with Tony Longhurst‘s team again in 1998 by this time his form was fading. From 1999 onwards he no longer raced full-time, driving just the endurance races as a hired gun. His final race was with Dick Johnson Racing, driving into a seventh placed finish at the 2002 Bathurst 1000.

He became a commentator with Channel Nine as part of their F1 coverage in Australia in the late 1980s, a role which lasted over a decade. Jones has since become involved in the Australian franchise of the A1 Grand Prix as Team Director.

Candice Falzon http://marksonsparks.com/candice-falzon/ http://marksonsparks.com/candice-falzon/#comments Sat, 21 Apr 2012 15:30:46 +0000 Paul http://marksonsparks.com/?p=77 Candice Falzon, professional athlete, model and face of Rival and Infinity is a young woman with the world at her feet! Growing up only minutes away from Maroubra Beach, Candice spent many of her days at the beach with her parents and brothers. Where the family would compete against each other as to who could ride the waves the longest. Her love for the water and competing grew and so her parents enrolled Candice into the local Nippers.

Not long after, Candice commenced swimming training with Coach Angelo Bassalo. Candice was also interested in running, so on her Nipper days, she participated in the beach sprints and flag. Combining the two acquired skills, Candice began to compete in ironwoman challenges. She won her first state medal as an under 13.

This same year Candice trailed for the Uncle Toby‘s Super Series Surf Life Savings Pro Circuit and gained selection. This was a huge moment in her sporting career, as she was the youngest competitor ever to turn professional at the age of 14. Candice participated in the series for two years until Uncle Tobys pulled out their sponsorship and the series was no more. This did not deter Candice! At the age of 16 years, Candice was the NSW state Ironwoman Champion, winning four medals in both the board and Ironwoman events, including the rely races.

In her Ironwoman career, Candice has won over 60 medals in the Sydney branch titles, over 10 at state titles and 6 Australian medals.

An Ironwoman competition is no easy feat as competitors power through a surf swim, a board paddle and a run a long the sand, then in some cases, a surf ski. The determination Candice needs to push herself through it is breathtaking.

When Candice is not competing or training, Candice is a successful and sought after  model.   Her love of life, bubbly personality and stunning good looks has rewarded her as the face of Running Bare sportswear, Rival Swimwear and Infiniti Fitness. With her pictures posted all over Australia, Candice has created an awareness of women in professional surf life savings. Candice has recently qualified for the 2008 Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Series with Round 1 airing live on Channel 9 on the 2nd February 2008.

Candice has also profiled in many national publications, including Inside Sports, FHM, Ralph, ZOO Weekly, Ralph, Woman‘s Fitness, Who Weekly, Fresh and Runners World.  Candice has been voted the 3rd sexiest athlete in Australia by Inside Sports readers, the 10th Sexiest Sports Model and one of the sexiest women by FHM for 2003, 2004 and 2005.

As her profile continues to rise, Candice has featured on numerous TV programs, including; Channel 9’s “The Footy Show”, ABC’s “The Fat”, Fox8’s “Celebrity Poker”, and is currently appearing as a celebrity contestant in Series 3 of Channel 7’s hit show “It Takes Two” partnered alongside pop sensation Anthony Callea!

Candice also made a documentary with Russell Crowe called “Australia Revealed”, which went to over 150 countries world wide and was aired on discovery and channel 7 with over 360 million viewers. Candice hopes that her television exposure will continue.

Hayley Bateup http://marksonsparks.com/hayley-bateup/ http://marksonsparks.com/hayley-bateup/#comments Sat, 21 Apr 2012 15:23:47 +0000 Paul http://marksonsparks.com/?p=80 Residing on the Gold Coast, Hayley Bateup, the charismatic 31-year-old Surf lifesaver / Ironwoman could possibly be the fittest Australian female athlete of all time. Underpinned by an incredible inner-drive and gruelling and constant training load, Bateup’s national & international record speaks for itself. Certainly, out of the water, there are very few prouder Australian athletes who can compare with her combination of striking physical appearance and accomplished presentation skills.

Intelligent, confident, charming and sometimes controversial, Hayley has proven to be an ideal presenter and interviewee for television, radio & print.

Hayley Bateup made history being the only athlete, male or female, to win the Coolangatta Gold three times. The Coolangatta Gold is classed as the toughest and hardest race to finish on the iron-woman calendar. In a distance of 31km against a blustering northerly, Bateup ski-paddled, swam, board paddle and ran her way to victory 3 times. Guy Leech did make history by winning the original Coolangatta Gold race twice and is quoted saying the ‘Gold’ ‘is not like a short course’ race implying the toughest competitor will win ‘as luck doesn’t come into it’. Hayley is now setting her sights on winning 5 Coolangatta Golds.

Throughout Hayley’s career she has received keen media interest. She has appeared in all avenues of media creating what is said to be the highest profile in surf sports. In 2008 she appeared in the channel 7 hit show ‘Gladiators’ as Nitro’, fastest gladiator which was profiled off her natural ability. Hayley is looking forward to working in the media industry as well as racing throughout the next few years.

Jeff Fenech http://marksonsparks.com/jeff-fenech/ http://marksonsparks.com/jeff-fenech/#comments Sat, 21 Apr 2012 15:23:09 +0000 Paul http://marksonsparks.com/?p=113 The three-time world champion at bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight is arguably one of the greatest boxers has ever produced. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York in June 2002, Fenech is recognised around the world as one of the sports greats. A controvserial draw with African great Azumah Nelson when the majority of the world saw him win, cost Fenech what would have been an amazing fourth world title at super featherweight.

A career spanning 1984 to 1996, Fenech turned professional after a controversial quarter final points loss at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Trained by Johnny Lewis, Fenech was known as the “Marrickville Mauler” and was like a pocket dynamo in the ring, capturing the hearts of Australian sporting fans with his unique expression, “I love youse all”. The head trainer, manager and promoter now passes on his never ending resources of boxing knowledge to the members of Team Fenech.

Joe Bugner http://marksonsparks.com/joe-bugner/ http://marksonsparks.com/joe-bugner/#comments Sat, 21 Apr 2012 15:22:59 +0000 Paul http://marksonsparks.com/?p=105 Former international heavyweight boxing champion Joe Bugner is the only white boxer to have gone the distance – twice – with the great Muhammad Ali. The first time was on February 14th, 1973 in Las Vegas and the second on June 30th, 1975 in Kuala Lumpur. Both times, Joe lost on points. He has also gone 12 rounds with the legendary Joe Frazier, losing a close verdict and beat James Bonecrusher Smith for the world title in 1998 to become the oldest world heavyweight champion ever at the age of 48.

Born in Hungary, and having boxed out of both England and Australia, “Aussie” Joe won every major Boxing title in the world including the British, Commonwealth, European, Australian and PABA titles. At the age of 48 he claimed the World title which he defended and won the following year.
Joe is in great demand as a speaker for all occasions and recently returned from Hong Kong where he was the honored guest speaker for the football Sevens. He is also a very accomplished TV and movie actor and has co-starred in numerous films – his latest being the critically acclaimed Australian crime caper ‘Getting Square’.

Hockeyroos http://marksonsparks.com/hockeyroos/ http://marksonsparks.com/hockeyroos/#comments Sat, 21 Apr 2012 15:18:46 +0000 Paul http://marksonsparks.com/?p=116 The Australia women‘s national field hockey team (nicknamed Hockeyroos) are Australia’s national women‘s hockey team.

Having played their first game in 1914,they are one of Australia’s most successful sporting teams, boasting three Olympic Gold Medals from the past six Games as well as winning two World Cups (1994, 1998) and three Commonwealth Games Gold Medals (1998, 2006, 2010).

The Hockeyroos have been crowned Australia’s Team of the Year five times and were unanimously awarded Best Australian Team at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

A notable part of the Hockeyroos colourful history has involved Ric Charlesworth. Charlesworth was at the helm of the Hockeyroos from 1993 to 2000, where his reign as coach saw the team win the 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1999 Champions Trophies, 1994 and 1998 World Cups and the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Most famously Charlesworth took the Hockeyroos to the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Games where the team won back-to-back Gold medals.

Given the extent of the Hockeyroos success, the team has consistently remained at the top of the World Hockey Rankings. From the late 1980s until 2000, the Australian team was ranked at number 1 in the world. Only once during this period, the Hockeyroos failed to win a tournament, on which occasion they finished 2nd.

With their sights firmly set on the 2012 London Olympics the future is bright for Australia’s brightest hockey stars.

Kostya Tszyu http://marksonsparks.com/kostya-tszyu/ http://marksonsparks.com/kostya-tszyu/#comments Sat, 21 Apr 2012 15:18:40 +0000 Paul http://marksonsparks.com/?p=100 Kostya Tszyu is a Russia born boxer who is an Australian citizen and is a four time world junior welterweight champion, including a period of time as the undisputed junior welterweight champion.

The son of a fitter in a metal factory and a nurse, Tszyu was born in Serov, a town near the Ural Mountains, in the former Soviet Union. Tszyu was the first champion to unify the junior welterweight division in over 30 years.

Kostya participated in the 1988 Olympic Games. At the Cuban world championship tournament in 1987, he came in second place, and at the Seoul Olympic games, he lost in the third round.
In 1991, he went again to the amateur world championships, this time held in Sydney. This was a trip that would change his life forever. Not only was the third time his charm, but he felt enchanted with the sights of Sydney and its people, and decided he wanted to live in Australia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, in 1992, Tszyu fled to Australia with his girlfriend, where they married in 1993 and became Australian citizens. Before marrying her, though, Tszyu had already turned professional, beating Darrell Hiles by a knockout in one round on March 1, 1992, at Melbourne.

In 1995, he received his first world title shot when he fought IBF world junior welterweight champion Jake Rodriguez at Las Vegas, Nevada. Tszyu became world champion by knocking Rodriguez out in the sixth round, and then defended the world title, beating former world junior lightweight and junior welterweight champion Roger Mayweather by a decision in 12, Hugo Pineda by a knockout in 11, Cory Johnson by a knockout in four and Jan Bergman by a knockout in six. After this string of defences, Tszyu became a highly touted world champion by many boxing magazines, and many articles about him appeared on Ring Magazine, KO Magazine, and other American boxing publications.

On June 5, 2005, against British boxer Ricky Hatton, Tszyu lost this fight, and his world title, by TKO after retiring on his stool at the end of the 11th round.

His record currently is of 32 professional wins (of which 25 are by knockout), two losses and one no contest. He is considered by many in Australia to be a national sports hero.
